RE: Electrolytes

I just re-read Susan G's article on Calcium Phosphorus ratio because
a friend of mine and I were discussing rice bran. She was claiming
that beetpulp = no thumps, and rice barn = thumps. Guess what? The
horse was on an all grass hay diet because of the thumps and then
supplemented with rice bran. Calcium-Phosphorus ratio way out of
balance according to Susan's article.

Susan G - so glad you have your website when my memory fails me!

If I remember correctly, it's something like that Calcium & Phosphorous
have to be balanced, and that the endurance horse loses lots of calcium
but not necessarily phosphorous? throwing it out of balance. You add
calcium to balance it back but if you add phosphorous too you never
catch
up. That's from memory and I could have it mixed up. Why don't you ask
Susan Garlinghouse. I was happy when I discovered dicalcium phosphate
because it was packaged for horses and it gave me confidence to be sure
it was edible. But then I mentioned it on ridecamp and someone told me
about the phosphate being a problem.
