Corns

Sue:
I take it these were the dry and hard type (they can be soft and
moist).
Corns are bruises in the seat of corn area (between the bar and wall),
usually cause by poor shoeing and /or trimming or deviations of
the bones in the leg predisposing the horse to the condition (or could be
under-run or  crushed heels)..

Trick is.. you have to decide what
caused them in the first place to know the odds for the future.

IMO, Barefoot is best for re-hab , with frequent attention.  And yes,
about 6 months is what it'll take to completely grow out if the damage
is deep.
If he's got to be shod for winter, try a rim pad instead of a snowball
pad.
