Re: Triggering Motilin...

Motilin release is proportional to the amount of stretch of the stomach walls.  The normal capacity of a horse's stomach is a gallon or two, so any amount of food in the stomach to stretch it even a little will trigger some motilin release.  To get a lot of motilin response, you would have to fill it pretty significantly.  At an absolute guess, I would estimate 2-3 pounds of dry beet pulp pellets would give you a reasonable response.  That's about half to 3/4 of a large coffee can full of beet pulp pellets.

Susan:

About how many lbs of dry beet pulp pellets (the only form that's available
in my area) do you think it takes to slightly overfill the stomach of an
average 800-900lb. arab in order to trigger the secretion of the motilin?

Thanks,
Kath
