January 19, 2001.  "People, Pets, and Vets" will be held at Okemos High School in conjunction with the school's science fun day.  This public information program is hosted by several Lansing area veterinarians and other animal-care providers and is sponsored by the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association.  The public is invited to attend and learn how to care for their own pets, see exotic animals, talk with veterinarians, listen to a cat's heartbeat, pet a variety of animals, and much more.  11 am to 4 pm.

March 11-15, 2002.  CVM will schedule its spring break in 2002 to coincide with the SAVMA Symposium (March 12-15, 2002 at Colorado State University).  Therefore, spring break 2002 for the CVM classes of 2004 and 2005 will be scheduled the week of March 11-15, 2002.  This is one week later than the university spring break.

April 6, 2002.  Vetavisit.  9 am - 4 pm.

CALENDAR SALE

The week of November 26th, the Feline club and Canine club will be selling unique calendars consisting of photos of pets belonging to members of the CVM community.  They will be available outside of the library during the lunch hour from November 26-30, 2001. The cost will be $15 each or three for $40.  For more information, contact Tracy Adams, SCAAFP president. 


ANIMAL-RELATED EVENTS AT THE MSU PAVILION

Animal-related events for the month of November include:  November 16-18: MQHA fall show; November 24: bred ewe sale; November 24: Michigan rabbit breeders fall show; November 24: Shorthorn fall production sale; and November 30: specialty dog show.

POTTER PARK ZOO

Potter Park Zoo is open 365 days a year.  Situated along the Red Cedar River and surrounded by an old oak forest, the zoo offers recreation, education and conservation for everyone.  The zoo is located at 1301 S. Pennsylvania Avenue, Lansing, and offers group tours, education programs, food, and gift shop.  There is a moderate parking and admission fee. The education department of Potter Park Zoo is looking for adults to join the zoo's volunteer organization.  Docent volunteers help with tours, outreach, and hands-on learning.  All volunteers assist with special events, grounds, beautification, animal displays, the Wonderland of Lights displays, and clerical work. Call 363-4730 to find out when docent classes are held.

OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS OF INTEREST

November 18, 2001.  Through a special promotion at the Lansing Mall, Capital Area Humane Society supporters can help the shelter and enjoy a festive night of shopping, prize drawings, and music.  The mall will close to the general public and from 5:30-8:30 pm, the mall will be hosting, "A wonderful night to share." There will be special discounts at stores, prize drawings, and music to enjoy while shopping.

The public can buy tickets to the event for $5 at a variety of participating charities, including CAHS.  Participating charities received one hundred percent of the revenue from the tickets they sell. Purchase tickets ahead by dropping by CAHS or at the door be entering the mall through the Barnes and Noble entrance. Diane Barker, Brody Complex Manager, will speak on "sustainable practices in residence halls" as part of a year-long series of campus-wide conversations over lunch hosted by the Office of Campus Sustainability/University Committee for a Sustainable Campus.  The presentations will be held in Spartan Room C, International Center.  The room will be open at 11:30 am and attendees can purchase lunch at one of the food court vendors or bring their own from home (food from other sources is not permitted).  Presentations will begin sharply at 12 noon and the sessions will conclude by 1 pm.  Feel free to attend any portion of the presentations that your schedule allows. December 8, 2001.  The Capital Area Humane Society's holiday open house will be held from 11 am - 3 pm. Crafts and baked goods sale, refreshments, entertainment, and fun for the whole family. December 8-9, 2001.  An MSU equine artificial insemination and breeding management short course will be held at the MSU Merillat Equine Center in Adrian.  Dr. John Berends, MSU Merillat veterinarian, Dr. James Rooker, equine practitioner, and Dr. Judy Marteniuk, MSU College of Veterinary Medicine, will instruct this one and one-half day course. December 13-14, 2001.  "Shoeing the Performance Horse" is the title of the 14th Annual Farrier and Veterinarian Conference, to be held in Rochester, New York.  Featured speakers include Dr. Olin Balch; Steven Teichman, farrier for the USA at the 2000 Olympics; and Deiter Krohnert, farrier for the German national equestrian team. March 8-10, 2002.  The Michigan Horse Council's Horse Expo 2002 will be held at the MSU Pavilion in East Lansing.  Featured presenters include: Lynn Salvatori Palm, an outstanding, nationally recognized trainer and instructor from Bessemer, Michigan; Linda Little Wolf, Ocala, Florida, a native American (Ojibway and Lakota Sioux) who presents a most interesting and informative programs titled "Native Visions"; Daniel and Barbara Nummers, Armada, Michigan, basic dressage training and how it applies to other disciplines and trick training; and Kandee Haertel, Galena, Illinois, executive secretary of the Equestrian Land Conservation Resource, who will address several trail issues.

April 19-21, 2002.  The Alliance for Contraception in Cats and Dogs (ACCD) will sponsor an international symposium on nonsurgical contraceptive methods for dogs and cats at Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, Georgia (near Atlanta).  ACCD is a new organization with the specific goals of sponsoring an international meeting to facilitate interaction of interested individuals and to encourage the exchange of ideas and research results.  Organizers for the first symposium are Dr. Stephen Boyle, chair of ACCD, and Drs. Henry Baker and Brenda Griffin of Auburn University. April 12-14, 2002.  The Kentucky Horse Park will present the 2002 National Dressage Symposium which will feature a progressive seminar from training level through grand prix with German trainer Conrad Schumacher.  Fifteen riders will be chosen by a selection committee to help demonstrate during the symposium.  Those interested in riding must submit a biography and video by October 2, 2001 to the attention of Rob Hinkle, c/o The Kentucky Horse Park, 4089 Iron Works Parkway, Lexington, KY 40511.
