Craig Johnson has a great video tape that explains how to teach a whoa. My horses will all
stop on a dime with just the word.
The deepening of the seat part is for a finished horse. Basically you ride them towards a
wall as you get close you pick up your reins, sit down and if they don't stop, the wall
will stop them and you will immediately back up. Not a punishment back up, just back up.
They begin to anticipate the wall and the back up and begin to stop. Add the word :whoa
when you are darn sure they will stop. Then again if they don't just back up. If they stop
just sit there quietly for a few minutes. That's the reward for a good stop, resting and
not having to back up.
