Maybe "bank account contest" would be a better term? 2000-3000 miles IS a 
long way to trailer for one race. But how many miles of trailering does it 
take to RIDE the 2000 miles it might take to win an overall point 
championship? Not to mention all the entry fees. True, there would still be 
several people every year vying for the top honor. But with the new format, 
even with higher qualification standards, larger numbers of the membership 
could afford to compete. Once you knew where the ride was you could pretty 
well budget the entire cost well in advance.
Of course, the high point system wouldn't cost anything extra for AERC to 
administer, the only cost would be the award itself.
