RE: BITLESS BRIDLES

Karen,

I have a 5 y.o. Peruvian Paso gelding that has never been in bit yet. He
started out with a traditional Peruvian bosal, on which the heavy reins are
attached on the top of the nose band.
I have since tried a simple english hackamore and have been better pleased
with the results, as he doesn't try to "nose out" of it like he did the
bosal, and his headset is better. Of course, it varies from horse to horse,
which is why this forum is so fantastic... so much collective experience to
learn from.

I have heard a few negative things about some of the bitless bridles (can't
remember which ones now!), only that when you pull on the reins, certain
parts of the headpiece tighten but don't always release very well, and the
release is what you need in order for the horse to recognize the completion
of the signal you have given him. If they ever get that little bug fixed, I
wouldn't mind trying it myself. Maybe some of our enterprising members are
working on a modified version of that? If so, let us know!

Kindest Regards,

Tracey Ritter

I am interested to know if any of you prefer bosal, hackamore or sidepulls
for longer distances. I have never ridden in a bosal or sidepull and I
wonder if a horse would have difficulty eating or drinking in a bosal and
which of the bitless bridles work more effectlively.

My horse is very strong and some of you have been most helpful with
suggstions I plan on trying. One of the suggestions was a bosal. I have
borrowed one and I have an EQUUS magazine article which explains how to
fit and use. Any tips?
