Re: RC: Those Damn Generators

Hmmmm...

This is interesting. Buford, GA (a tiny little town on Lake Lanier) is
pretty close to me. May run over and check these out.

"Solar Generator" is kind of a misnomer for this device. It's really
nothing but a set of solar panels charging a 100 Amp Battery. The 12
volt battery output is fed through an inverter to provide AC. Nothing
new.

In simple terms, the difference between a "generator" and an "inverter"
is that a generator is a mechanical device which generates electricity
by turning an armature with a gasoline (or diesel) engine. (The reverse
of a motor) Same concept as water flowing thru a dam generating power
except on a smaller scale.

An "inverter" simply converts DC to AC. Lets you run 110 volt
appliances from a 12 volt battery. No moving parts. It's not very
efficient, however.

Unless you have a serious need for some specific 110 volt appliance, a
set of solar cells on the roof of the trailer keeping your battery(s) up
should be adequate. Run the other stuff on Propane. That's all this
"Solar Generator" is....they just packaged it with an inverter to give
you 110 volts AC. There are, by the way, numerous 12v appliances (hair
dryers, etc.) in the boating industry that work well.
