RE: Trail Riding Safety/watering horses

This process was started when horses were used for work. That is true they
were used for WORK! They would go all day with out being watered and then
come in from the roads or fields hot and sweaty and put in a standing stall.
If they were allowed to drink while hot, then stand still in a stall, they
would most likely colic.

Now days, at least in endurance circles, the horses are allowed to continue
with exercise or walking and we do not water just twice a day.

I can't imagine doing any ride now, no matter how short, not allowing my
horse to drink if they wanted too. I am now almost exactly the opposite. I
try to get them to drink at any decent looking water. I'm not sure how this
thought process got started, but was probably something stupid.

Can you imagine trying to ride a 50 or 100 following
this practice of horse watering? We'd see horses on
IV's left & right!
