If I were going out into deep backcountry, I would take an
emergency locator beacon.  This is a little transistor radio-size
device that, when turned on, calls up an internationally-organized
emergency rescue effort that locates you via satelite GPS.

However, I would not use this device for an injured horse, even
if it likely meant the death of the animal.  These devices
are only to be used in the event of a real threat to human
life:  for example, what happened to Teddy's significant other.
That would have been the perfect application of this technology.

I don't know if they've actually gone and done this yet, but
the authorities were getting so ticked-off at the misuse of
these devices, they were considering punishing people who
set them off under less than emergency circumstances by
billing them for the rescue effort.

But if you're really in trouble, these devices can summon help.
