Re: RC: dead mare at NASTR

I do not usually post on ridecamp but I felt I needed to because of the
direction some of the posts were going in on I. V. ing horses.  As much as I
do not like to see an IV sticking out of a horses neck I really hate seeing
horses "hidden" behind trailers that would have benefited from not only being
treated but being treated at the first sign of distress.  Many riders do not
have their animals treated immediately because they do not want the STIGMA
that their peers put on them because their horse got sick!!    Not every
horse that needs to be treated was deliberately over ridden with the front
runners - many are middle of the pack and not having a good day.  If you have
been in this sport long enough you have probably had a "bad" day out on the
trail where your horse may have benefited from having fluids administered.  I
certainly have and many riders whom I truly respect have had horses that
colic or become dehydrated or tied up while participating in an endurance
event.  If you haven't you are lucky.  Riders who deliberately over ride
their horses (which sounds like the NASTR situation) deserve the wrath of the
membership but on the other hand fellow riders should support or be
supportive of the rider who administers the proper treatment to their horse
immediately even if it means having an IV sticking out of their neck (even if
it doesn't look good to spectators).
