I think this is one of the big factors in the change in the sport.  I can remember when 30-40 riders (all distances) was a REALLY BIG RIDE, and there were only something like 7 or 9 rides in the entire NW region.  We all knew everybody, and if someone was new, they were heartily welcomed and "indoctrinated". <g>  It's hard to have the same sort of camaraderie when there are 180 riders in camp.  Sort of like the difference between small towns and big cities...
