condition of horses

Completed our first 50 miler this past Saturday. Beet pulped, vitamin E, and
sho-glo vitamins, every 2nd day for a week before the ride. Friday night
gave them e-lytes with pro-bi. Their hay ration is 40% alfalfa and grass.
Cool day and took it easy. Did not e-lyte all day. Tough ride, came in 2
hours before cut off time. These horses bounced into camp, springy and all
A's on vet cards. One mare has hair like a rock star, so she sweated, the
other hardly. I have conditioned on steep hills but, no long miles. I am
so surprised, they have never been this perky after their first ride of the
year. I know the cool day helped, but I am thinking I have been over doing
it with all of the above before and maybe it is better to keep supplements
light etc. Any comments. Pam
