RE: RE: RE: Giant/midget

Totally disagree. The halter ring demands longer necks - almost
too long in my eye. I've seen as many short horses with high/low
syndrome as tall horses. I'm not saying that halter breeding
is the correct breeding, but somewhere someplace there's a quote
running around "WITH ALL OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL, PREFERENCE SHOULD
BE GIVEN TO HEIGHT" so we have the halter breeders breeding
giraffes.

Also give some consideration to the fact that the halter bred
horse is most usually fed 100% alfalfa and allowed to stand
around a stall all day, literally pampered to death. I
strongly believe that a lot of bone and balance problems
stem from early overnutrition and lack of excercise than anything else.

Maria,

You are absolutely correct, the breeding trends of recent decades have
created a taller and larger Arab. It used to be that 14 hands was a
large
Arab and 15 hands, if you ever saw it, was a beast. Now we have larger
Arabs (i.e. taller Arabs) that were breed with a total disregard for
neck
proportions as they relate to the increased height. As a result, we
have
tall Arabs that are forced to put one leg forward to reach the ground.
That
is why almost every tall Arab you see will be exhibiting some degree of
High-Low Syndrome. Unless, of course, the breeder had the foresight to
keep
the neck proportionate to the height.

Since Arabians are supposed to average between 14 to 15 hands I am
thinking
Becky is on the right track. They have maintain this size for over 3000
years
and in the last 50 yrs people are trying to change that. I believe one
of
the
reasons Arabians are natural born endurance horses is because they a
smaller
in stature and big on heart. Taller horses break down faster than
smaller,
again have you noticed that wild horses are always smaller?
