Re: Horse Cookies Recipe Needed.

Interesting that you should ask.... I just spent much of the day making a
huge batch to give as Christmas gifts. There are several recipes on
endurance.net. Go to the home page and then look under "fun Stuff". There
are several. Just leave out the elytes if you like. What I have found is
that you can hardly go wrong. Oatmeal and flour are good binders. I used
whatever I found in my feed room and added some cob which my neighbor feeds
to her goats. So what I ended up with was cob, oats, alfamo, wheat bran,
rice bran, Strategy (a complete feed pelleted), light Karo Syrup and
Grandma's Dark Molasses, oatmeal, corn oil (a little), flour and water. I
sprinkled sugar on some of the batches and they look good enough for me to
eat. The hardest thing for me is to be able to form the dough into cookies
as it tends to want to fall apart or is so sticky that I can't get it off my
hands. I kept adding flour and some water till I got the right consistency.
I also found that using two teaspoons helped form the dough. One teaspoon to
scoop the dough, then press the inverted other spoon to form a little
cookie.
Another tip given me by a friend is to bake them very slowly so that they
are dry and hard and then can be stored in a tight container for a very long
time. About 250 degrees for 30 or so minutes. I recently found some cookies
in my feed room that I had made in early spring. They were still hard and no
sign of spoilage.
Have fun.
