Re: head carriage and split reins

Hi Carla & List,

I sewed Velcro onto my new set of round nylon split reins. Works great. But
I use a set of flat braided cotton rope reins, also, which are closed. I
have to admit, they are way more comfy, so I use them more often. To keep
them from going over the horse's head in a wreck, I put a latigo rope keeper
on my saddle so they are secured to the horn with the keeper. I suppose the
keeper could break, but it held fast when Bobby fell down the ravine and
ended up in the creek. It also held on Dani last spring when she got away.It
was the snap that broke on that one, the rein stayed attatched to the
saddle. With the closed rein, I ride with a drag line attatched to the
halter and the other end stuck in my pocket. When we stop for a break, I
hold with that, and the rein doesn't slip down the neck. Hope this helps.
