dangerous sports

Lif mentions several sports that may be more dangerous than endurance
riding. Are there statistics relating injury to sport which include
endurance riding? In industry the risk factor is calculated by number of
worker hours to number of lost time injuries (simple division); then there
are ratings within each type of industry on the risk at each company (has to
do with calculating worker's compensation rates).

Do we track injuries by criteria such as: length of ride, experience of
rider, type of injury? Other factors: place, weather, terrain? AERC does
collect information on equine injuries, and this is useful for all of us,
especially our horses. But for humans?

Frankly, when I am conditioning, just me and the horse, I am much less
likely to wear a helmet. When the ride is soon, I'll put on the helmet to
accustom my neck muscles to the extra and awkward weight. At rides, I wear
the helmet for two reasons: peer pressure, and the "pack" factor (many
horses at once contribute to the potential for a more dangerous situation).
