Re: Methods to safely pony more than one at a time?

First off, welcome to ride-camp...Now then...Packer's are ponying more than
one horse at a time, even today!!! We used to average six mules per
string...Each mule had on a back saddle..either a decker or a saw buck with
a load attached to the saddle(150-250lbs)...tied onto the back of each
saddle was a thin nylon cord called a piggin string...this came off the back
of the saddle a couple of inches and had a loop fashioned at the end of
it...the next mules's lead rope was tied through the piggin string of the
mule infront of him...and so on down the line..the piggin string acted as a
saftey release...it would break under pressure...so if a mule went on the
wrong side of a tree...etc...instead of causing a huge wreak the piggin
string would break...This is totally different then the kind of ponying you
are talking about---we were on narrow trails..always at a walk and
loaded...I'll just bet there are some crazy folks out there who have figured
out how to do it, at high speeds, with more that one endurance horse!

safely pony more than one horse at a time? How in the world did packer's do
it a hundred years ago? Thanks for your thoughts!
