We had the same problem 18 years ago when we started to create our 100 mile
Swanton Pacific. Creativity yields some amazing results!

<<I'd like some input...do you think twenty miles is too far to go for the
first vet check? (this is the fifty)>>

Not really. Not ideal perhaps, but not excessive, if that's all you have to
work with. I think our 50 has gone 18+ miles before the first vet check.

<<...also, on the fifty, what do you think about a vet check, with a 30
minute hold, 2 or 3 miles from the finish???>>

Could you make that a 15 minute hold? Thirty is probably unnecessary and
excessive so close to the finish line, although it depends somewhat on the
logistics of the rest of the ride.

<<Also---What do you think about having a required CRI, not only during the
main vet check but also right before you head back out on the trail?? >>

As a ride manager, I would leave that up to the decision of the head vet.
You're going to have enough responsibilities without thinking about vet
criteria. But you could discuss it with him....
