My take on these "NH" programs are that they are people training systems. 
Horses can learn anything presented in a calm consistant manner. It's the 
people who need the work on being consistant giving the same verbal & body 
language cues. The round pen (or little square pen) keeps the 2 in close 
enough proximity to work things out.
There are so many people getting horses with no previous experience with 
animals, there is nothing "natural" about it---for the people. That's why 
the different programs work for different people, it depends on what the 
people are more comfortable with.
