Try having your vet contact David Hood, DVM at Texas A & M
(dhood@cvm.tamu.edu) or Jan Young, DVM in Arizona (pep@phnx.uswest.net). Dr.
Young is a farrier in addition to being a vet and worked  with a number of
horses with dsld. Many of those horses have since been sent to Texas A & M
for further research.
