Sonya, Years ago the Appalachian Trail did allow equestrian usage. No longer.
The hikers took over an outstanding horse trail. By the way, they have done a
wonderful job on maintenance and have seceded in convincing the rest of us
that
the tail is all theirs. All others, keep out. I would recommend riding in the 
George Rogers National Forest Area in Virginia if you want to experience the
Appalachian trail. The horse trail runs very close to the AT in a lot of
places. The ride is wonderful.  Jerry Fruth
