RE: RC: GPS

After using survey grade GPS for mapping trails I have discovered that the
normal hand held units are far from accurate. I have gone to an external
antenna mounted on top of my helmet and get good results as far as tracking
is concerned but with no way to do differential correction the accuracy is
in doubt. I find course deviations (on the same portion of trail) to be as
much as 200 feet. Also the hand held units do not give an "on ground"
measurement of distance. They produce a "map" distance not taking into
consideration the slope distances.

I would estimate as much as 10% difference can occur. The hand held units
give a good "estimated distance" but not an accurate one. Of course you get
your moneys worth when you consider a survey grade unit will cost you 4k
minimum.

I have a pretty nice GPS.
It tells your (SOG) speed over ground. You can look at
it while you're trotting and see how fast your going.
It also shows your total mileage ridden, traces your path,
records altitude changes. You have to figure your average rate
of speed on this one.
I carry mine in a pomel bag.

The thing I DON'T like about my GPS is that the batteries
only last for 2 long rides (or about 8 hours). When the
batteries are low, the thing shuts itself off.
You really have to invest in a battery re-charger, or it
get's pretty expensive.

As far as I know no-one makes a chargable (plug in)
GPS, which I think is the way to go..
SO, when buying one, I'd put checking out the battery life
right at the top of the list.
