RE: Re: Squaring toes of hind hooves

My horse does this if I lay off of conditioning because he has a bad
left stifle.

I think that the better solution to forging is to rocker
the front hooves rather than the hinds, because the fronts will breakover
faster and get out of the way of the hinds. I actually had a farrier
ask me if my mare forged (short-backed arabs "always" forged, you know....)
when she didn't. Then he squared her hind toes THEN she started forging
because she was breaking over too quick on the hinds. I switched farriers
after that.

Beau needed more support under the heel bulb on his fronts and my farrier
was paranoid about pulling shoes. So I asked him to rocker the fronts
and put more heel the front shoes and the farrier was more amenable to
putting a longer heel (bigger shoe) on because the breakover is quicker.
I like it better that way because there is noticeably less tendon strain
anyway!!!! His hinds are not rockered, but I had to convince my farrier
to use a wider web shoe.

Things are going great now, and I have a farrier that works with me without
arguing! Beau is going great for the first time in his life!!!!

Check out the hopeforsoundness website. You can get a lot of answers
there.
You may also want to have the vet check out your horse in case something
else is going on that is causing the collapsing. I, personally, do not
feel
a horse will forge due to laziness. Could be shoeing, fatigue, or
something
else.
