I don't think anyone has suggested that everything these people teach is
wrong--on the contrary, John, Ray, Pat et al are "marketing" common sense
horsemanship that used to be a way of life for many people. The take-home
message I've seen people stating here is not to take everything as gospel
just because John, Ray, Pat, or whoever says it, but rather to develop that
sense of horsemanship and to examine what they preach. None of these people
got where they are (egos aside) without SOME understanding of horse
psychology. And if one can come away from their programs understanding how
to better read a horse and how to act themselves in such a way as to send the
desired message TO the horse, then hooray. But all too often, folks who
don't know any better come away simply mimicking without understanding the
kernel of truth in all of it, and take to heart things like the 3-second
physical punishment of the horse, the choking down that someone else
described, etc. Sad.
