Re: RC: Imprinting and following up after

Hi Jerri
All of my horses are "lap horses". No secret, just spend time with them.
If you have access to a hotwalker, I used to put the dams on it and have
the foals follow them around to get used to the noise, pattern etc (use
bungie cords--- LEADERS-- for the lines) and eventually have the babies
on the walker by 4 months old, following their dams on the hitch in
front of them and then later, their siblings. Often I will put pony
bareback pads on them to get them used to the girth and something on
their backs. A friend suggested I take a pic of my 4 month olds on the
hot walker with the bareback pads on with the caption "we start them
young at Whispering Oaks!"
Then we clip their whiskers, give them baths, trailer them and most
importantly, let them grow up in pasture with their siblings. We bring
them into the barn now and again for "tune-ups" and of course there are
carrot days in pasture. My belief is that just showing them love as they
grow up makes later training REAL easy!
