Did you have a pit crew?  My crew and I always bring my horse's food and equipment to all stops, regardless if management supplies it, then you don't have to worry if "anything will be left"  Also, tools to pull a shoe come in handy. 
I don't rely on anyone to take care of my horse or myself.
