Doing Own Farrier Work (trimming)

My farrier will probably retire soon. He is open to suggestions (from vet)
and does a good job. I went thru about 4 before him. How hard would it be for
me to trim my endurance horses? I have trimmed horses but not horses used
hard enough to be injured by my errors. I use easyboots (and barefoot as much
as possible) so I wouldn't have to shoe. I have practice horses that are
pasture potatoes. Is there a book that can help me out? Any other advice?
