Re: RC: Electrolytes, stress

Kidney failure can just happen. My mother had both kidneys fail when she
was 35 years old for no apparent reason. She had given birth to my
sister about 5 days previous and both mother and baby were doing fine
and then her kidneys just shut down.

She was shipped to IU medical center which had the only dialysis unit in
that part of the country at that time and was there for four months. Her
kidneys just started to function again one day and she was fine. She is
75 and hasn't had a problem with them since.

She had one of the best kidney specialist in the country while at IU and
he told her that kidneys can shut down for no apparent reason. He also
said that they can also turn back on if the damage is kept to a minimum.

So in the case of the horse was the unbalance in the electrolytes a
cause or an effect? Most potassium is inside the cells and not in the
blood stream. So if tissue had been damaged, then the potassium inside
the tissue would now be in the blood stream and create an unbalance when
tested.

We'll probably never really know unless something else pops up later.

I guess no matter what we do and no matter how well we try to take care
of them, they are living beings - like us - and like us the thread of
life can be a very thin thread.
