Ambling - definition

Frank,
could you please give a definition of ambling? Where in Duncan's
continuum (pace - stepping pace - rack - foxtrot - trot) does it fit
in?
With Icelandics, we use a "gait map" (see
http://www.dream-teams.com/Gait.htm for an example) to visualise
this continuum, sorry the illustrations aren't too great (the
foxtrot/trotty tolt picture is completely wrong), but maybe you could
locate the amble somewhere on there?.

Curious!

Jana (who has only ever heard of "ambling" as the old English
catch-all term for any slow-ish lateral gait and would like to learn
more)
