The trot is indeed (approximately) a 2 beat diagonal gait, but there is
always some degree of disassociation assuming your timing equipment is
accurate enough. This this may be hairsplitting, but in that continuum of
timing from pace to trot, some arbritrary lines are drawn describing when
the gait is no longer a trot but becomes a fox trot and so on through rack,
stepping pace and pace.
