Re: Eye injury

Dear Amber;
My mare poked her eye with a stick. The day she did it she teared a lot, I
called the vet and he said to wait 'till morning to see if it was just
irritation or what. Next morning it was completely opaque...I was
frightened. Vet stained her eye and there was a hole smack dab in the
middle of her cornea, about the diameter of a pencil. Branch most likely.
He medicated her, put her on one meds that dialated the pupil, another that
medicated it...I had to do one twice a day, the other 3 times a day(I
think). Her eye had to be completely shaded, so I took a regular Farnum fly
mask and used an old piece of worn out jeans material to cover the inside of
one side of it. Made the dart in the same place and just sewed it in.
Worked wonderfully, completely blocked out the light, was soft and
absorbent for her tearing, and washable. At the end of the medication
period I took her back and he re-stained the eye and she was just fine.
Hole had healed with no obvious scar. She's 20 now and eyes are just great.
The trick is that you have to be religious about applying the meds...get up
in the middle of the night if you have to...cannot hit and miss with eye
meds.
