What is a GPS?

Sandy said: OK..I give...what is a GPS unit?????? If it's one of those satellite
tracking devices, my next question is...how did we get along all these years
without them:>))) And if your batteries do die..does that mean you're
lost????

Sandy, a GPS unit is a hand held "Global Positioning System" unit that uses
satellites to check is position and is about the size of a small cell phone. It
can be used to navigate and determine distance traveled. Some folks use them to
get mileage of trails. There was a thread about them not too long ago on
Ridecamp so I thought this post I copied may be important. What Eric McMaster
was talking about is once the lithium backup dies all the user inputs, way
points etc. will go away and have to be reentered.

The backup battery preserves the user settings and user input data when the
regular AA batteries die and get replaced. But leaving dead AA batteries in the
GPS unit will cause the Backup to drain excessively and eventually die. If that
happens on the trail for instance then it's just a weight for the sponge. I
don't own one but some riders are just as techie as my computer geek son-in-law
and do use them.

You not lost if don't depend on these high tech instruments to get you through.
Just know how to use a compass and pay attentions to the trail markings and
occasionally look behind you, the scenery looks different back there.
