Re: RC: Odd Swellings

 They seemed like hives.
That's what the vet thought.

developed an allergy to flies. The first was a mare I
stole (long story) from my neighbor. Her corral was a
lake of urine and when I had the vet out to test her
urine, we discovered that she had likely been treated
with steriods in the past. Steroids destroy kidneys.
This mare couldn't be ridden, as she had so much pain
in her kidneys. BTW, she drank 50 + gallons of
water/day and went through a 50#, that's right, 50#
mineral block of salt monthly.

The second gelding I bought from someone I knew came
with a handful of steroids for his "hives". He was
allergic to flies and had bumps all over him. His
former owner couldn't stand the sight of these bumps
and took the vet's advice to use steroids on him. I
promptly through the steroids away and doused the
gelding in fly spray - daily. The "hives" were gone
in a week. While he performs galantly on the trail,
he drinks about twice what my other horses drink and
goes through salt like crazy.

I wish vets, like doctors should, would explain the
consequences of allopathic medicine. So many pull out
a prescription pad to get rid of the patient. I see
this on a daily basis.......
