Re: Complete Feed

Hi Taramb,

I think complete feed will work well for athletes, but I still would add
good grass to add the good chewing satisfaction, bulk, and mental health. I
feed Triple Crown Complete, which I've compared to Purina Complete
Advantage. Both have beet pulp and vitamins, etc. Neither are quite as
high in fat as the comparable Farr feed, but these are more available in my
area. The ingredients on the Triple Crown list good quality stuff. It
also doesn't have corn, so if your horses are allergic to corn you can feed
this one. One of my friends' older horse got diarhea from it, though. I
think it was just the one bag she got, because she gave the remainder to me,
and my mare got a little loose too. After switching back to our regular
lot, the mare's stool firmed up.

This one mare of mine that is a hard keeper does really well on the complete
feeds plus good grass hay. She likes the feed, and put on weight with it
even while we conditioned lightly. I had tried all kinds of feed before,
and she ate them all eventually, but liked this one better. She doesn't eat
much when she's excited, like at a ride, so I had to find something
appealing.

The combination of beet pulp with molasses makes for a brick in the winter
freezing weather, though! I got used to chopping it out of the bag with a
metal scoop until the weather got warmer.
