Re: Rapping (??)

rappiong comes from the showjumping world.

rappings horrible, this is where some one holds up a pole or a stick next to
a jump pole and then as the horse jumps over the jump lifts the pole or
stick up to hit it on the underside of its legs or bodies. A 'refinemet' is
to attach either sharp prikles ie. hedgehog skin or nails to the rapping
pole.

So basically the more and higher the horse jumps the more it gets rapped to
make it jump higher, it can be detected by a good horse becoming a rearer
though obvioulsy other things can cause that as well) or by the distinctive
back kick over a fence some horses exhibit.

I used to think it was one of those urban myths as I couldnt imagine some
one doing that to an animal until my husband heard Richsrd Smith recomending
it as a training method on Radio 1 ( National radio station in the uk). its
banned of show grounds but obviouly no way to enforce a ban at peoples own
yards.
