RE: cleaning ears (was Ticks in ears)

Just something to mull over. Head shaking can be a symtom of a photo
sensitivity problem. Sorry, can't remember what it's called. It seems that
some horses, particularly white faced horses, develop a sensitivity to UV
rays on their faces, causing a reaction by nerves in the face, below the
eyes (I think) which causes a furious itching to occur and the horse shakes
it's head. A friends horse developed this problem late in life. Her vet kept
treating the poor horses ears, horse was getting head shy and still shaking
it's head. I read about the condition in a Southern States magazine article
and passed it on to Ann. Basicly, to test if this is the problem the horse
either has to be kept out of the sun or wear one of those fly masks with the
nose cover. If the head shaking improves or stops then you've found your
probable cause. Perhaps someone else can supply the correct name for this
condition???

Any good tips for cleaning horse's ears?  One of my horses gets scurfy ears
and will shake his head side to side.  Vet has drugged him and cleaned them
to be sure there are no seeds or ticks, but he still does some side to side
head shaking (though much less).  She advised me to use the ear cleaner
formulated for dogs, but I have a hard time getting near him with the stuff.
I've used it on two occasions, and then quit cleaning them because I don't
want to make him headshy.
