Snowy River

Hi, all --

Some people have asked about the horse in the second Snowy River movie
breaking its leg. A few years ago (after the second movie) I spoke with a
girl who had lived in Australia for a while and said she had worked at the
ranch where Denny (the horse in question) was trained. She claimed he was
still alive and she had ridden him, although he was basically retired
because the movies had pretty much done him in. I have nothing to back this
up other than what she said - she sounded credible.

On the same subject, I have a book buried somewhere about movie horses in
Australia, and it had an article about Showy River 1. The article claimed
there was some doctoring, but basically the scene was shot "as is". There
was nothing mentioned about replanting trees. I can't imagine taking on
that size of a job. The trees were indeed verticle, and I do remember that
one in sequence, Jim passed an old dead stump before the horses he was
chasing did.(!) The amazing thing to me was that in the book it stated
that Tom Burlinson learned to ride a horse about six weeks before the start
of shooting. He had never been on a horse before that. And -- he did all
of his own stunt work. That takes cajones.
