Actually, Tom, I much prefer to beat folks who are skilled and trying just
as hard to beat me. But then I haven't run into too many morons in this
sport--most of the competitors that manage to stay around for very long are
pretty sharp cookies. I HAVE run into a few folks who fit the "armchair
quarterback" model--and often they are lacking in the wisdom gained in the
field.

Well, you and the existential bridgebuilder have a wonderful opportunity to
put this armchair quarterback in his place. Simply document your assertions
that what I've said is not true. This should be quite easy for the two of
you--one could disprove the law of gravity while the other cites
biomechanical studies in the horse demonstrating the the horse is actually
traveling uphill when going downhill.

I assume the bridgebuilder would concede that if Horse and rider can overcome
gravity via twisting themselves like pretzels and moving 60% of the combined
weight to the hind legs when going down hill, then they should be able to
move that extra twenty percent forward when going uphill, thereby shifting
80% of their weight to the forelegs going uphill. This would be exciting to
document and I'm sure you can find some papers that suggest this is entirely
possible.
