Eating hay and high pulses

It is realy strange that some people beleive that eating grass/hay pushes up
the pulse. I have never heard of this theory here in South Africa.
My moms old gelding retired at 24, top ten and BC at 98% of all his rides
and High point BC for the Cape Province, was encouraged to eat at every vet
check before going to the vet as it definately brought his pulse down! my
gelding and my stallion are both allowed to eat all they want before seeing
the vet and we have pretty low pulses for example 44 on the second check of
a 25 for my (hormone crazed) stallion at his first ride.
Boy its hard enough to get them to eat at all sometimes why restrict them
when they want to!
