RE: Bromelain is from pineapple stem

I have been using Bromelain for a number of years. I first noticed it as an
ingredient in a joint supplement I was taking and very happy with. I did
some research and found that it does have anti-inflamnatory properties.
Sorry, can't recall the group that was doing the bromelain research project.
It was compared to ibuprofen and a placebo in a study using a test group of
volunteers. It supposed got similar result to ibuprofen. But, dosages over
500mg may cause increased or rapid heart rates. I actually experienced this
myself. Before I read this article I bought a jar of 1000mg tabs. I took one
tab and inside of 15 min I felt dizzy, slightly ill and had a pounding rapid
pulse! Spent a couple hours flat on my back in terror of a heart attack!
Most joint supplements that include bromelain are in the 50-250mg range and
that seems to be a safe level from what I've read and experienced. At least
it doesn't bother me.

My 6th edition of Goodhart and Shils says that
bromelains are "proteolytic enzymes from pineapple
stem". Some research has been done with pancreatic
enzymes (extracts) and adding bromelains to aid in the
absorption of fats. Bromelains by themselves were not
shown to improve the fat absorption in patients with
pancreatic insufficiency.

I do not see where they would be anti inflammatory.

I have used pancreatic extracts and plant enzymes,
such as those from papaya fruit to help patients dying
from pancreatic cancer. It seemed to help them with
digestion as well as, reducing diarrhea.
