I would add to Gesa's excellent advise:
Sponge, sponge, sponge
Electrolyte, electrolyte, electrolyte (& start a few days before the
ride)
Watch the heart monitor & stick to your ceiling --- if the horse gets
overheated, he won't start eating or drinking at the vet stop until his pulse
drops to the 80's, so you lose all the time you gained by going fast anyway.
Do your homework --- long slow distance starting years before that first
50, miles, miles, miles
