fencing for small areas

We need to put up some more fencing so we can bring our stallion home. I 
figure I will either go with 1 1/2" electric tape on vinyl covered T posts or 
with wire mesh  on wood posts with a board or the electric tape on top. Here 
is the problem. We only have 1 acre. The back half of the lot is the horse 
area. I currently have a 1/4 acre paddock with a run in for my gelding. This 
fence is rotting so I have a chance to redo the area. We have a tree root 
problem so the t posts sound good. The fence needs to keep the horses in, and 
my 4 year old son and any tresspassing kids out. Not to sound mean, but 
electric would deter joyriders. Is an electric tape fence not suitable to the 
small area? I just don't know if I trust it. Any thoughts?
