Re: rabies

Rabies is endemic in Egypt with all the stray cats and dogs. When I first
moved here I not only had any mammals in the house innoculated but I had my
kids and myself done as well. The French rabies vaccine is less painful than
a tetanus shot by far and it was no problem to arrange. A lot of us do this
if we have smaller kids. Now mine are teenagers and simply used to not
touching strange animals for any reason. It's a lot easier to keep my
rabies vaccinations up to date and not worry so much about all the horses in
my barn. I had a particularly nasty tempered mare bite my hand a year or so
ago and my doctor insisted on a tetanus and a rabies shot as a matter of
course. So now it's ok if I bite anyone.

I also breed Rat Terriers for rat hunting in grain siloes here and because
we currently have about 20 dogs, I do all my own innoculations. The dogs get
rabies on a yearly basis and lepto every 6 months. Rats are dirty little
critters.
BTW, the rabies vaccine is not as
nasty as it used to be in the 70s. Now it looks clear.. then it looked
like pus and I hated to have to inject it into someone into the fatty
tissue and the last time I checked on rabies it is now intramuscular and not
so painful. Mary Ann
