tow vehicle size
More fuel for the tow vehicle debate:
I agree that an awful lot of people tow with vehicles really too small to do
a safe job in the long run. I used to be one of them. I've towed my
Brenderup (supposed to be OK pulled by a 6 cylinder car) with a 6 cylinder
Chevy Blazer - worked great on flat land, but in the mountains of New
England I burned out a clutch, then after getting that fixed burned out the
transmission (though it took a couple years of hauling to accomplish this).
Mechanics told me if I used a larger tow vehicle this wouldn't happen again.
So when I could afford any thing at all larger I got a 20+ year old (8
cylinder) 1/2 ton Suburban. I was amazed at being able to get to rides in
half the time because I didn't crawl up hills anymore. But when I
eventually got a newer 3/4 ton Suburban (both Suburbans were 350) it was the
best yet. It gets 15m./gal.towing. I did have a 454 Chevy for a short time,
but its terrible (8m./gal.) gas efficiency made more difference to me than
being able to cruise up mountains over the speed limit (I didn't need to
encourage that behavior in myself either)!
