:-)  My husband thought if horses are tame enough to let you on their back,
then why would they be scared of bikes?  Well, that was before he had a
horse.  He was also influenced by seeing movies where people could jump onto
their horses from buildings, and jump off of their horses and onto trains.
Horses obviously should not be scared of a little old quiet bicycle.

This thread has made me think that maybe if I am riding on bike infested
trails, I'll try putting up a little sign at the trailhead explaining why
bikes scare horses and see if it does any good.
