RE: Re: Fwd: RC: Mountain bikers

It is not the meeting head on that is a problem. It is the approach from the
rear when the bike is traveling fast and the biker does not give warning.
The bike makes little or no noise until it is upon the horse. Then the horse
being surprised at this object fast approaching from the rear spooks out
ahead! Our horses are very familiar with bikes they show no fear or surprise
when approached from the front. We have seen hundreds in this manner.

Our "incident" was caused by a rapid, silent approach from the rear! Rider
had the ability to observe us more than 100 yards away but never slowed or
announced his approach. Result? Much damage!

The main problem isn't the spooking at the sight of them, it's the fact that
two objects coming around blind corners from opposite directions tend to
collide. We try to keep talking so we can be heard, but bikes & horses are
really quiet in the woods (or is it the wind whistling through our ears??)!!
On twisty turny narrow trails, visibility is very limited at the speeds
being travelled.
