Take them off after the loop yes 

Take them off in the middle of a hill only to need them in the river
bottom on the other side only to not need them coming out of the river
only to need them again a mile later - all with other horses passing you
on the trail?

I don't think so :)

As versatile as they are taking them on and off at vet checks is about
as often as they can be changed reasonably.
